Kayak provides any amazing experiences: be able to explore places that can not be seen from the sandy beach down rapids with choppy waters, down waterfalls and make crossings with wonderful visuals. But it is important to know that for each situation there is a particular model kayaking. So, I decided to put together a mini guide for you not to miss if you are thinking of having a kayak.
To find out which model kayak you need to buy, first of all, you should ask some questions. Truly understanding your need, it becomes easier to know the best type of kayak for you.
How much are you willing to spend? Prices can vary in a considerably range depending on the size, type of material, type of kayak and mark?. Learn what type of kayak you need so you will be able to compare prices and see which is the one that fits in your pocket.
Where will you use the kayak? Will you paddle in calm waters such as lakes and rivers? Or will use to take rapids and use in heavy seas? Or, do you want to challenge yourself with dangerous waterfalls?
How far will you go you to make long journeys, which includes several days? Or you will take trips of a few kilometers? Depending on the time it will be paddling may be a need to store food and equipment.
You will paddle alone, in pairs or in groups? There are several types of kayaks can accommodate more than one person. So before you buy, it is good to know if you will paddle alone or would you rather have the team of one or more people.
What is your experience with the kayak or how do you plan to devote to sports? With such a large number of formats and models of kayaks, if you are already experienced or will take the game seriously, it may be worth spending more money on that? Purchase rather than buying a kayak underperforming in the future hinder its development as a practitioner. But if only for recreation, there is no need to spend lots of money in a kayak you will not know how to extract its full potential performance.
After answering these questions, it will now be much easier to know what is the perfect kayak type for you. I will show the kayaking opportunities (types and styles) you can buy and based on your answers you will be able to find one that is right for you.
Sit on Top: The Sit on Top is the kayak in which the person stays with the body entirely on the kayak deck. They are common in hot countries, such as Brazil or Peru, where it will be no problems getting wet with stroke and there is also the possibility that you can take a dip to cool off and then come back up without problems (not the case of sit inside). They are generally broad, which gives a lot of stability to the person who is on top, so they are very used for fishing, recreation, and photography.
Inside Sit: This type kayak has a cockpit, in which the rower stands with legs beneath the deck, or within the structure of the kayak. Many of these kayaks give the possibility of using a sort of skirt are made to cover the area of the cockpit, preventing the entry of water. This is a significant advantage when it comes to paddling in the icy waters since the person does not get wet either while rowing. The sit inside is usually the most efficient hull design to slide in the waters, larger space for carrying equipment and allows greater use of body movements to control it. Its features make the Sit Inside the most recommended for those who want to make crossings and or down rapids waterfalls.
Types of Kayak
There are several types of kayaking, and each is designed for an individual need, I show here that the most common are:
Recreational Kayak: This kayak is suitable for beginners or for those who need stability in rowing. They are large to ensure stability and not very long, which makes cornering, but hinders the paddle straight. Typically they do not have much room to store equipment, so they are not used in crossings lasting longer than one day. It’s a good choice for those who are starting out and do not want to spend much money.
Because this type of boat offers stability, it is very common for fishing (there are several designed templates especially for fishing: with spaces to engage the rod and in some you can pedal instead of going rowing), photography (due to stability) and short crossings.
Oceanic and Touring Kayak: It’s made for long voyages in the open sea and ensures stability in severe conditions. It can also be used to cross lakes or rivers without rapids. Its hull is shaped to increase support in waves or choppy water. The sea kayaking has more space to store equipment and food, which makes it an excellent partner in more than one-day expeditions. Finally, being longer and have keels or rudder, it is much easier you can paddle straight with speed, even with currents and side winds.
The significant difference between the touring kayak and the sea kayak is that the latter is greater than the first, so the sea kayak possible to make a terrific cross since their storage capacity is greater and it is easier to maintain the course in a straight line. While the tourism to be lower, it is very easy to maneuver and is generally used in smaller crossings.
Whitewater kayaking: It is used to kayaking down the rapids, so it’s shorter, less stable and does not have fins. They are easy to maneuver and agile. The cockpit is tight and is designed to keep you in the kayak in the toughest conditions. Its hull is made of sturdy materials enough to withstand possible shocks average in a rapid descent.
- Short: They are easier to turn, maneuver and are slower. They do not have much storage space, so they are not suitable for crossings.
- Long: it is harder to turn and maneuver but are faster. Recommended for longer distances to have more storage space and facilitate the path straight.
- Broad: I have greater primary stability and facilitates the input drive and output. How are heavier, they do not reach high speeds.
- Thin: There are more unstable, lighter, can walk straight easier and more efficient at the time of the stroke.
The kayak can be made of various materials such as plastic, kevlar, carbon fiber, fiberglass and even wood. Although not play as kayaks manufactured in other materials, plastic kayaks are simpler and cheaper. So, for those who do not know whether to take the sport seriously or will use them in extreme conditions, our recommendation is that you start with a plastic kayak.
Kayak for two or more people
Be careful when buying a kayak such, when doing so make sure you have a team whenever paddle, as it will be almost impossible to navigate with just one person in a kayak that was designed to carry two or more. Therefore, I recommend buying a kayak for each, and eventually a partner arise, it is best to hire an extra.
